Before You Call BDL: Quick HVAC Troubleshooting Tips to Save You Time and Money!
At BDL, we’re here to help with all your HVAC needs, but sometimes a quick check on your system can resolve the issue without requiring a service call. Here are some practical tips to troubleshoot your HVAC system before you give us a call.
1. Check Your Circuit Breaker
If your system isn’t running, start by checking your circuit breaker. A tripped breaker might be the culprit. If it’s tripped, reset it and see if your system powers back on. However, if the breaker trips again, it’s time to call a professional—this could indicate a deeper issue.
2. Check The Indoor and Outdoor Switches
HVAC units have shut off switches at the indoor and outdoor units. It’s possible that someone may have turned off one of these switches by accident or because they didn’t know it’s purpose. Please be sure these switches are in the ON position.
3. Inspect for Water Around the System
Look for water pooling around the base of your HVAC system. This could be a sign of a clogged drain line or other issues that need attention. During snowy or icy weather, check that your outdoor venting and any outdoor drain terminations are clear of snow and ice to ensure proper and safe operation.
4. Check Your Thermostat
Double-check that your thermostat is set correctly. Ensure it’s in the right mode (heat or cool, depending on the season) and set to your desired temperature. If you have a multi-zone mini split system, all air handlers must be in the same mode (heat or cool) or the system will shut off on an error code.
5. Inspect and Replace Your Filter If Needed
A dirty filter can restrict airflow, reduce the efficiency of your system and can even cause it to shut down on an error code. Check your filter and replace it if it’s dirty or clogged. Clean filters not only improve performance but also enhance air quality in your home.
6. Power Cycle Your System
Sometimes, a simple reset can work wonders. Turn your system off, wait about 5 minutes, and power it back on. This can sometimes restore function or at least get you more run time until a technician is on site to permanently fix your issue. NOTE: Sometimes your system will display error codes that can be helpful in diagnosing an issue. Power cycling your system can reset these error codes. It is best practice to call us before power cycling your system to make sure you are doing it correctly and taking videos of any error codes that might be present before the reset. We are happy to walk you through this over the phone free of charge.
